Recovery point objective

Also called: RPO

PathTerms

Definition

Recovery point objective, or RPO, is a metric that defines the maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time. It represents the point in time to which data must be recoverable after a disruptive event. In practice, RPO dictates the frequency of data backups or replication. Achieving a low RPO is crucial for minimizing business disruption and ensuring operational continuity. For instance, a financial institution might set an RPO of one hour, meaning they can afford to lose no more than one hour's worth of transactions. This differs from Recovery Time Objective (RTO), which measures the maximum acceptable downtime. RPO is a key concept tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
