Definition

A Region is a distinct geographical area where a cloud provider has data centers. These data centers are grouped into distinct locations, each comprising multiple Availability Zones, which are isolated physical facilities. This geographical separation allows for high availability and disaster recovery by ensuring that if one Region experiences an outage, services can continue to operate from another. Regions are crucial for meeting data residency requirements and optimizing latency for end users by deploying resources closer to their physical location. For instance, a company might choose an AWS Region in Europe to comply with GDPR regulations. Unlike a Zone, which is a single data center, a Region encompasses multiple Zones within a geographical area. Understanding Regions is fundamental for cloud architecture design and is tested on exams like AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CCSP.
