A Recovery Time Objective (RTO) defines the maximum acceptable duration for an IT system or application to be unavailable following a disruptive event. It represents the target time within which normal operations must be restored. In practice, the RTO dictates the urgency and type of recovery strategies implemented, such as backup restoration or failover procedures. Understanding RTO is crucial for business continuity planning, ensuring minimal operational and financial impact from outages. For instance, an e-commerce website might have an RTO of one hour, while an internal HR portal might tolerate a four-hour RTO. This differs from the Recovery Point Objective (RPO), which specifies the maximum acceptable data loss. The RTO concept is frequently assessed on cybersecurity certifications like CompTIA Security+ and CySA+ as well as CISSP.
