Definition
Recovery time objective, or RTO, defines the maximum acceptable duration for an IT system or business process to be unavailable following a disruption. It represents the target time within which normal operations must be restored after an incident, such as a system failure, cyberattack, or natural disaster. In practice, RTO dictates the urgency and resources allocated to recovery efforts, ensuring business continuity and minimizing financial losses. For instance, an e-commerce website might have an RTO of 15 minutes to prevent significant revenue loss. This differs from Recovery Point Objective (RPO), which specifies the maximum acceptable amount of data loss. Understanding RTO is crucial for cybersecurity professionals and appears on exams like CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
