Scope Management is the process of defining, documenting, and controlling what work is and is not included in a project. It involves clearly establishing the project's objectives, deliverables, features, functions, tasks, deadlines, and costs. This is achieved through detailed planning, requirements gathering, work breakdown structures, and change control processes. Effective scope management ensures the project stays focused, avoids scope creep, and delivers the intended value within budget and schedule. For instance, a software development project's scope might include building a user login system but exclude implementing a complex reporting module in the initial phase. A common confusion arises with requirements management, which focuses on detailing what the scope entails, while scope management oversees the boundaries themselves. This concept is fundamental to project management certifications like the PMP and CAPM.
