Definition
Servant leadership is a philosophy where the leader's primary focus is on the growth and well being of people and the communities to which they belong. This approach prioritizes serving others, including team members, customers, and the wider community, before considering the leader's own needs or ambitions. In practice, a servant leader empowers their team by removing obstacles, providing necessary resources, and fostering an environment of trust and collaboration. This leadership style is crucial for building high performing teams, enhancing employee engagement, and driving innovation within an organization. For instance, a project manager acting as a servant leader might proactively resolve conflicts between team members or secure additional budget to ensure project success. Unlike traditional hierarchical leadership, servant leadership emphasizes influence and collaboration over authority and command. This concept is frequently tested on PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
