Shift left security

Definition

Shift left security is a proactive approach that integrates security considerations into the earliest stages of the technology development lifecycle, rather than addressing them later. This means building security into requirements, design, and coding, and testing security vulnerabilities from the start. By shifting security left, organizations can identify and remediate risks much earlier, reducing the cost and complexity of fixes. For instance, developers might implement secure coding practices and conduct static code analysis during the coding phase to catch potential flaws. This contrasts with traditional methods where security was often an afterthought, addressed only during final testing or deployment. This concept is frequently tested on certifications like CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP, emphasizing its importance in modern cybersecurity.
