Definition
Sizing is the process of determining the appropriate capacity and resources needed for a technology system or component to meet performance, scalability, and cost requirements. It involves analyzing current and projected workloads, user demand, and operational needs to select the right size of hardware, software, or cloud services. Proper sizing ensures that systems perform efficiently without being overprovisioned and incurring unnecessary costs, or underprovisioned and failing to meet demand. For instance, a web server's sizing would consider the expected number of concurrent users and the complexity of the web pages it serves. This differs from capacity planning, which focuses on future growth, whereas sizing addresses immediate resource needs. Sizing is a critical concept tested on exams like AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate and CompTIA Network+.
