Stakeholders

PathTerms

Definition

Stakeholders are individuals or groups who have an interest in, are affected by, or can influence a project's outcome. This includes anyone from end-users and customers to sponsors, team members, and regulatory bodies. In practice, identifying and engaging stakeholders early ensures their needs and expectations are understood and managed throughout the project lifecycle. Understanding stakeholder perspectives is crucial for project success, as their support or opposition can significantly impact progress and acceptance. For instance, a software development team must consider feedback from both the marketing department and the end-users when designing a new application. A common point of confusion is mistaking stakeholders for just the project sponsors, when in reality, the circle of influence is much broader. This concept is fundamental in project management domains tested on PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
