Technical debt

PathTerms

Definition

Technical debt refers to the implied cost of rework caused by choosing an easy, limited solution now instead of using a better approach that would take longer. It's like taking out a loan on future development time, where shortcuts accrue interest in the form of increased complexity, reduced maintainability, and slower progress. In practice, teams often incur technical debt when under pressure to deliver quickly, prioritizing immediate functionality over robust design. This debt can significantly hinder future development, making it harder and more expensive to add new features or fix bugs. For instance, skipping comprehensive unit testing to meet a deadline creates technical debt that will likely lead to more defects later. Unlike outright bugs, technical debt often arises from deliberate, albeit short sighted, decisions rather than accidental errors. Understanding technical debt is crucial for agile practitioners and is tested on exams like the PMI-ACP and PMP.
