A Web Application Firewall (WAF) is a specialized security tool designed to protect web applications from malicious attacks. It acts as a shield between a web application and the internet, inspecting incoming HTTP traffic for suspicious patterns and blocking harmful requests before they reach the application. Implementing a WAF is crucial for preventing common web exploits like SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and unauthorized access, thereby safeguarding sensitive data and maintaining service availability. For instance, a WAF can detect and block a sudden surge of requests targeting a known vulnerability, preventing a denial-of-service attack. Unlike a network firewall that operates at a lower network layer, a WAF understands and filters application layer traffic, making it specifically suited for web security. This concept is frequently tested on security certifications such as CompTIA Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
