Firewall

PathTerms

Definition

A firewall acts as a digital barrier, controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. It functions by inspecting data packets and deciding whether to allow them through or block them, much like a security guard at a building's entrance. Implementing firewalls is crucial for protecting sensitive data and preventing unauthorized access to networks and systems. For instance, a corporate firewall might block access to known malicious websites while allowing employees to connect to necessary business applications. Unlike a proxy server which acts on behalf of a client, a firewall operates at the network level to filter traffic. This fundamental security control is a core concept tested on exams like Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
