Palo Alto Networks Certification Training Course

Palo Alto Networks Certified XDR Engineer Certification Training Course

We'll get you ready for the Palo Alto Networks Certified XDR Engineer exam, the Specialist credential for engineers who deploy and run Cortex XDR.

Course focus: Planning and installation, XDR agent configuration, ingestion and automation, detection and reporting, and maintenance and troubleshooting, mapped to the official XDR Engineer blueprint.
Course Overview

What the XDR Engineer course covers and who it's for.

Per Palo Alto Networks, XDR Engineer validates the skills engineers need to deploy, configure, manage, onboard data and troubleshoot with Cortex XDR. It's the engineering half of the recommended path after the PCDRA retirement.

We follow the five domains in the official datasheet. Agent configuration, ingestion and automation, and detection and reporting are 22% each, so labs cover profiles and policies, Broker VM and collectors, parsing rules and detection rules.

Course Objectives

Get ready for XDR Engineer the way the exam is built.

01

Cover the Whole Blueprint

Work through all 5 domains in the official XDR Engineer datasheet, weighted the way the exam weights them.

02

Go Deep on Cortex XDR Agent Configuration

Cortex XDR Agent Configuration is 22% of the exam score per Palo Alto Networks, so it gets the most class time.

03

Practice in a Lab

Hands-on lab work on the tasks the XDR Engineer blueprint lists, not just slides.

04

Be Ready for Test Day

The exam is in person at a Pearson VUE test center with multiple choice, matching and ordering items. We practice all three.

Who Should Attend

  • Security operations and SOC engineers.
  • Detection engineers.
  • Security architects and support engineers.
  • Former PCDRA candidates.

Prerequisites

  • Palo Alto Networks doesn't list a required prerequisite certification, and we don't have enrollment prerequisites either.
  • Experience with endpoints and log sources will help. Security Operations Professional is a good first step.

Exam Blueprint

What the XDR Engineer exam covers.

Palo Alto Networks splits the XDR Engineer blueprint into 5 domains and 18 objectives. Here they are in full, with the sub topics the datasheet lists under each one.

Domain 1: Planning and Installation (14%)

1.1 Explain the deployment process, objectives, and resources (for example hardware, software, data sources, integrations)

1.2 Explain the deployment and functionality of Cortex XDR components

  • XDR agent
  • Broker VM
  • XDR Collector
  • Cloud Identity Engine

1.3 Configure user roles, permissions, and access controls

1.4 Demonstrate understanding of data retention and compute units

Domain 2: Cortex XDR Agent Configuration (22%)

2.1 Configure endpoint prevention profiles and policies

2.2 Configure endpoint extension profiles and policies

2.3 Configure endpoint groups

Domain 3: Ingestion and Automation (22%)

3.1 Onboard data sources (for example NGFW, network, cloud, identity)

3.2 Manage simple automation rules

3.3 Configure Broker VM applets and clusters

3.4 Configure XDR Collectors

3.5 Configure parsing rules

Domain 4: Detection and Reporting (22%)

4.1 Create detection rules to align with requirements

  • Correlation
  • Custom prevention rules
  • Behavioral indicators of compromise (BIOCs) and indicators of compromise (IOCs)

4.2 Configure exceptions and exclusions

4.3 Create custom dashboards and reporting templates

Domain 5: Maintenance and Troubleshooting (20%)

5.1 Manage Cortex XDR software component updates (for example content, agents, Collectors, Broker VM)

5.2 Troubleshoot data management issues (for example data ingestion, parsing)

5.3 Troubleshoot Cortex XDR components (for example agents, Collectors, Broker VM)

Before You Start

What you should know before XDR Engineer.

Here is who Palo Alto Networks says the XDR Engineer exam is for and what it expects you to bring, taken from the official datasheet.

Study Plan

How we approach XDR Engineer prep.

The weights tell you where to spend your hours. Cortex XDR Agent Configuration leads at 22%.

Keep the official datasheet open while you study and tick off each objective as you finish it. That is the simplest way to find your gaps before exam day.

Our course follows the same blueprint, with on demand lessons you can pause and replay, and our students pass at a 98.8% rate across Accumentum courses.

Exam Policies

The rules around XDR Engineer.

Once you pass XDR Engineer, the certification stays valid for two years. Palo Alto Networks recertification means retaking the current exam.

Passing a higher level exam in the same track automatically extends your active lower level certifications in that track by two years. For XDR Engineer that can include an active Security Operations Professional, Cybersecurity Practitioner or Cybersecurity Apprentice certification.

If you don't pass, you get a results report broken down by domain. Palo Alto Networks requires a 15 day wait before a second attempt, 30 days before a third and 90 days before any attempt after that. After a pass you can't sit the same exam again for 18 months.

Exams are delivered in English through Pearson VUE, and candidates testing in non English speaking countries get a 30 minute time extension by default. Your badge and certificate come through Credly.

Career Outcomes

Jobs that line up with XDR Engineer.

XDR Engineer suits the people who deploy and tune Cortex XDR. That means detection engineers, SOC engineers and security engineers who onboard data, write rules and keep agents healthy.

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, information security analysts earned a median annual wage of $129,180 in May 2025. BLS also projects employment of information security analysts to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. A median is the midpoint, so half earned more and half earned less, and your own pay will depend on location, experience and employer. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
