Portfolio management

PathTerms

Definition

Portfolio management is the centralized management of a group of projects, programs, and other work to achieve strategic business objectives. It involves selecting, prioritizing, authorizing, managing, and controlling these initiatives to ensure they align with the organization's overall strategy and deliver maximum value. This process allows organizations to make informed decisions about resource allocation, risk management, and performance monitoring across all their endeavors. For instance, a company might use portfolio management to decide whether to invest in developing a new product line, upgrading its IT infrastructure, or acquiring another business, balancing potential returns against associated risks. Unlike program management, which focuses on coordinating a specific set of related projects, portfolio management takes a broader, strategic view of all organizational investments. This concept is fundamental to the PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP certifications.
