Definition
An issue log is a central document used in project management to track and manage problems that arise during a project's lifecycle. It serves as a repository for all identified challenges, including their description, impact, owner, and resolution status. This log ensures that potential roadblocks are not overlooked and are systematically addressed by the project team. By maintaining a clear record of issues, teams can proactively mitigate risks and keep the project on track towards its objectives. For instance, a software development team might log a bug discovered during user acceptance testing as an issue, assigning it to a developer for correction. Unlike a risk register, which documents potential future problems, an issue log records problems that have already occurred. This concept is fundamental in project management domains tested on the PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
