The Product Owner is a key role in agile frameworks, responsible for maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the development team. This individual acts as the voice of the customer and stakeholders, defining product features and prioritizing the product backlog. They translate business needs into actionable user stories and acceptance criteria, ensuring the team builds the right product. The Product Owner continuously collaborates with the team and stakeholders, making decisions about what to build next based on feedback and market demands. This role is crucial for delivering a product that meets user expectations and achieves business objectives. For instance, a Product Owner might decide to prioritize a new feature that addresses a critical customer pain point over a less impactful enhancement. Unlike a Project Manager who focuses on project execution, the Product Owner is solely focused on product vision and value. This role is frequently tested on the PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP certifications.
