Definition
A risk assessment is a systematic process for identifying potential threats to an organization's assets, analyzing the likelihood of those threats occurring, and evaluating the potential impact if they do. It involves understanding vulnerabilities within systems and determining the probability and severity of adverse events. This process is crucial for prioritizing security efforts and allocating resources effectively to mitigate the most significant risks. For instance, a company might assess the risk of data theft from an unpatched server to determine if immediate patching is warranted. Unlike a simple vulnerability scan which only identifies weaknesses, a risk assessment quantifies the potential damage from those weaknesses. Risk assessment is a foundational concept tested on certifications like Security+, CySA+, and CISSP.
