The Schedule Performance Index (SPI) is a project management metric that measures how efficiently a project is progressing against its planned timeline. It is calculated by dividing the Earned Value (EV) by the Planned Value (PV). An SPI greater than 1 indicates the project is ahead of schedule, while an SPI less than 1 signifies it is behind schedule. This metric is crucial for project managers to identify schedule variances early and take corrective actions to keep the project on track. For instance, if a software development project has an SPI of 0.85, it means the team is only accomplishing 85% of the work planned for that period. SPI is often confused with the Cost Performance Index (CPI), which measures cost efficiency rather than schedule efficiency. This concept is frequently tested on PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
