Definition

The Scrum Master is a servant leader role within the Scrum framework responsible for guiding a development team to achieve its goals. This individual ensures the Scrum process is understood and enacted by coaching the team, removing impediments, and facilitating Scrum events. The Scrum Master's primary focus is on empowering the team and fostering an environment where they can be most effective. For instance, a Scrum Master might help a team resolve a technical roadblock preventing them from completing a user story. Unlike a traditional project manager who directs tasks, the Scrum Master facilitates self organization and accountability within the team. This role is frequently assessed on the PMI-ACP, CAPM, and PMP certifications.
