SSID stands for Service Set Identifier, which is essentially the name of a wireless network. It is a sequence of characters broadcast by a wireless access point to identify itself to devices seeking a connection. When your phone or laptop scans for Wi-Fi, the list of available networks you see are all identified by their SSIDs. This identifier is crucial for users to select the correct network to join and for network administrators to manage and secure their wireless infrastructure. For instance, a coffee shop might broadcast an SSID like "CafeGuestWiFi" to allow customers to connect to their public network. While it functions like a network name, it is not a security feature itself and should always be paired with strong encryption like WPA2 or WPA3. Understanding SSIDs is fundamental for network security and management, appearing on certifications such as CompTIA Security+ and CISSP.
