SWOT analysis

PathTerms

Definition

SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique used to identify and evaluate a project's or organization's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. Strengths and Weaknesses are internal factors that the project or organization has control over, while Opportunities and Threats are external factors that can impact success. By systematically examining these four elements, teams can develop a comprehensive understanding of their current situation and potential future challenges. This analysis helps in formulating strategies that leverage strengths, address weaknesses, capitalize on opportunities, and mitigate threats. For instance, a software development team might identify a strong internal skill set as a strength, a lack of user documentation as a weakness, a growing market demand as an opportunity, and a new competitor as a threat. It is crucial to distinguish SWOT from a simple risk assessment by recognizing that SWOT also considers positive internal and external factors, not just negative ones. This framework is frequently encountered in project management certifications like PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP.
