Definition
The To-complete performance index TCPI is a calculated ratio that measures the cost performance required to complete the remaining project work within the remaining budget. It is used to assess the efficiency needed from future work to achieve the project's financial goals. TCPI essentially answers the question: what level of performance must we achieve from now until the end of the project to meet our budget targets? For example, if the remaining work requires an average performance index of 1.2, it indicates that the team must perform at a higher efficiency than previously achieved to stay within budget. This differs from the Earned Value Index EVI which measures past performance. TCPI is a key metric on the PMP CAPM and PMI-ACP examinations.
