Work breakdown structure

Also called: WBS

PathTerms

Definition

A work breakdown structure, or WBS, is a hierarchical decomposition of a project's total scope into smaller, more manageable components. It breaks down the work into deliverables or phases, ensuring all project objectives are captured. This structured approach helps teams organize and define the project scope by visualizing the work as a tree of tasks. The WBS is crucial for effective project planning, estimation, resource allocation, and control, providing a clear roadmap for execution. For instance, building a house might have top-level tasks like 'Foundation', 'Framing', and 'Finishing', each further broken down into subtasks. Unlike a project schedule which focuses on time, the WBS focuses on the project's deliverables. It is a fundamental concept tested on PMP, CAPM, and PMI-ACP examinations.
