What the Security Operations Architect exam covers.
Palo Alto Networks splits the Security Operations Architect blueprint into 3 domains and 10 objectives. Here they are in full, with the sub topics the datasheet lists under each one.
Domain 1: Business Alignment and Strategy (22%)
1.1 Design data residency, retention, and access control models within the Cortex tenant to meet standards (for example GDPR, PCI, local privacy laws)
1.2 Assess architectural considerations aligned to product licenses
1.3 Define security operations center (SOC) performance metrics and reporting requirements
Domain 2: Platform and Data Architecture (49%)
2.1 Plan data pipeline architecture using data pipeline tools (for example Cribl)
2.2 Design tenant structure, multitenancy hierarchies, and component placement for various deployment scenarios
- Broker VM architecture and components
- XDR Collector deployment
- Engine deployment
2.3 Define the strategy for data sources, integrations, and feeds, and select the appropriate onboarding methods
Domain 3: Automation and Detection Strategy (29%)
3.1 Define strategy based on data sources, business alignment, organization strategy, and best practice
- Detection use cases
- Automation use cases (for example data sources, integrations)
3.2 Develop plans to integrate existing detection rules and automation use cases from legacy SIEM to Cortex XSIAM
3.3 Design architecture for development and production tenant scenarios and their associated impacts

- Advanced knowledge of SOC processes and models, including the transition from a traditional Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution to an AI-driven Security Operations platform
- Expert-level understanding of common security frameworks such as MITRE ATT&CK, NIST incident response plan, and relevant compliance standards (for example GDPR, HIPAA)
- Advanced understanding of data ingestion, normalization, and correlation across disparate security data sources (that is network, endpoint, cloud, identity) to support AI-driven analytics and threat modeling
- Working knowledge of common network and cloud infrastructure (for example AWS, Azure, GCP, OCI) and how security events from these environments are generated, collected, and processed for analysis
- Extensive experience with vulnerability management, attack surface management (ASM), and proactive threat hunting methodologies
- Awareness of engineering-level competencies in: ○ SIEM architecture (that is data onboarding, sensor deployment, content packs) ○ Endpoint detection and response (EDR) for endpoint security, behavioral analytics, and use of the Causality View for root cause analysis ○ Automation for designing, developing, and managing complex automation playbooks and integrating third-party tools through Marketplace
- Advanced knowledge of reference architectures describing how Palo Alto Networks solutions come together to solve customer problems

Recommended background
Recommended work experience: 5+ years designing security operations, incident response, and threat detection / prevention solutions in large-scale enterprise, multicloud, and XDR / SIEM environments, 2+ years with Palo Alto Networks Cortex architecture and solutions.
Recommended certifications first: Palo Alto Networks Certified XSIAM Analyst, Palo Alto Networks Certified XSIAM Engineer.
How we approach Security Operations Architect prep.
Start with Platform and Data Architecture. At 49% it is the heaviest domain on the blueprint.
Palo Alto Networks products change often, and the exam follows the current release. Read the release notes for anything you use in the lab so you aren't studying an old screen.
Our course follows the same blueprint, with on demand lessons you can pause and replay, and our students pass at a 98.8% rate across Accumentum courses.
The rules around Security Operations Architect.
Palo Alto Networks certifications, Security Operations Architect included, are valid for two years from the day you pass. To stay active you recertify by passing the exam again.
Passing a higher level exam in the same track automatically extends your active lower level certifications in that track by two years. For Security Operations Architect that can include an active Security Operations Professional, Cybersecurity Practitioner or Cybersecurity Apprentice certification.
If you don't pass, you get a results report broken down by domain. Palo Alto Networks requires a 15 day wait before a second attempt, 30 days before a third and 90 days before any attempt after that. After a pass you can't sit the same exam again for 18 months.
Exams are delivered in English through Pearson VUE, and candidates testing in non English speaking countries get a 30 minute time extension by default. Your badge and certificate come through Credly.
Jobs that line up with Security Operations Architect.
Security Operations Architect is the senior credential on the Cortex side. It fits SOC architects and senior detection and response leads who design the platform, the data model and the detection strategy.
Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, information security analysts earned a median annual wage of $129,180 in May 2025. BLS also projects employment of information security analysts to grow 21 percent from 2025 to 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. That figure is a national midpoint. Where you live, how long you have been in the field and who you work for all move the number. Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
